This begins by defeating the problematic nature of the stigma surrounding mental illness.
Read more "The Problem"Acquiring good mental health is a huge asset for an athlete. According to the sport performance Mental Health Model (Morgan, 1985), an inverse relationship between psychopathology and sport performance exists. In contrast, acquiring poor mental health costs the athlete a huge liability. For that reason, the mental health of an athlete is equally as important as the fitness health.
Read more "The Concern"In order to change the negativity and the stigma around mental health, conversations need to be had. There are currently many conversations happening in schools around Canada, but not much within the sporting community. Lots of the talk occurring talks about how sport can be beneficial as a way to come with mental health issues, but when talking about implementing changes within sport itself, more needs to be done.
